Parent and Nonparent Perception of the Multimodal Infant Cry
نویسنده
چکیده
This study examined whether perceivers can detect infant distress in the visual and acoustic signals within the cry. Parent and nonparent perceivers rated distress in 3-, 6-, 8-, and 12-month-old infants’ cries that were manipulated to separate facial, vocal, and bodily action. Mean perceiver ratings differed for highand low-distress cries at each infant age on the basis of facial and vocal action, but not bodily movement. Perceivers rated the cry sound as more distressed and the cry face as less distressed with increasing infant age. Parents rated the cries as less distressed overall than did nonparents. The results suggest that information about distress is available for perceivers in the crying infant’s face and voice.

Infant Cry Detection and Pain Scale Assessment: A Pilot Study
A biological alarm system that connects mother and new born is referred as infant cry. Infant cry is a first means of communication through which mother understands the level of distress/ needs. Infant cry can be considered a multimodal behavior which involves limb movements, facial expressions which changes over time to identify the needs of an infant. The cry of the baby cannot be predicted a...

The first postpartum months constitute a critical period for parents to establish an emotional bond with their infants. Neural responses to infant-related stimuli have been associated with parental sensitivity. However, the associations among these neural responses, parenting, and later infant outcomes for mothers and fathers are unknown. In the current longitudinal study, we investigated the r...

Objective: to examine the underlying mechanisms of adults’ intended caregiving responses to cry sounds in a behavioral genetic design and to investigate the role of cry pitch and perceived urgency in sensitive and harsh caregiving responses. Methods: the sample consisted of 184 adult twin pairs (18-69 years), including males and females, parents and nonparents. in an experimental design we pres...
متن کاملChildhood social inequalities influences neural processes in young adult caregiving.
Childhood poverty is associated with harsh parenting with a risk of transmission to the next generation. This prospective study examined the relations between childhood poverty and non-parent adults' neural responses to infant cry sounds. While no main effects of poverty were revealed in contrasts of infant cry versus acoustically matched white noise, a gender by childhood poverty interaction e...
